The Call to Serve

Serving others is a fundamental teaching of Jesus. In Mark 10:45, Jesus states that he came not to be served, but to serve. This principle encourages us to put others' needs before our own.

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” - Mark 10:43

Practical Ways to Serve

Serving can take many forms, from volunteering in the community to helping a neighbor in need. Acts of service reflect God's love and can have a profound impact on those around us.

Carrying the cross

It’s a short verse, but it carries a depth that takes a lifetime to grow into. Jesus doesn’t say greatness is wrong. He doesn’t urge us to shrink ourselves, to avoid ambition, or to stay quiet in the shadows. Instead, he redirects our understanding of greatness entirely. In God’s kingdom, greatness begins at ground level, in the places where humility and love meet action.

We live in a world that often measures success by status, recognition and how loudly we can make our voices heard. But Jesus invites us to see things differently. He gently turns the world’s ladder upside down and shows us that true significance is found not in being served but in serving others.

Service isn’t always grand or dramatic. Most of the time it looks wonderfully ordinary: making time for someone who needs to be heard, offering a hand without being asked, noticing the person on the edge of the room and drawing them in, giving without expecting anything in return. These are the quiet acts that echo the heart of Christ.

When we serve, we reflect the One who knelt to wash dusty feet, who welcomed children when others turned them away, who shared meals with those society pushed aside. Jesus demonstrated that greatness isn’t a destination reserved for a chosen few. It’s a way of living available to all of us.

Perhaps the challenge for us this week is simple. Where can we choose service over self? Where can we embody compassion instead of convenience? And where might God be prompting us to step forward with a servant’s heart, even in the smallest of ways?

Greatness in God’s kingdom doesn’t shine from a pedestal. It grows quietly in the soil of everyday kindness, faithfulness and love. And every time we serve, we draw a little closer to the example Jesus set for us all.

May we be people who seek greatness the way he defines it: through humble, joyful service.
